Review
If you read my last review on the Gargoyles (2022) comic you know as a long term fan that I was onboard with this series. Needless to say my pull list was updated and ready to go when the second issue dropped.
The second issue opens up with an interesting perspective of narration coming from Angela, Goliath’s daughter. We get to see more of the rookery and the Gargoyle egg. A good snapshot of the Gargoyles’ daily lives.
We also get to see Dominic Dracon, freshly released from prison meeting his granddaughter. The Dracon family has seen better days but they always have something up their sleeve. Even in the middle of this turf war.
I really like that it still feels like a Gargoyle episode with separate scenes and stories going on so the audience can see the full picture of simultaneous events.
At the end of the first we see that Maggie and Derek are expecting a child, and while that is great news for several people, the Clan won't be ecstatic to learn Thailog is among them. I liked Thailog as a villain in the TV show and he shines well in his role on the comic book page. One of the strengths of the Gargoyles series is that there wasn’t really a BAD long-standing villain. They all had their own characteristics, personalities, and goals.
The real highlight of the issue though comes at the end. Where another fan favorite makes an appearance and boy could I HEAR the voice actor speaking that dialogue. Greg Weisman hasn’t lost his touch at all when it comes to each and every character. They all have their own unique and familiar voices for us old fans, but even if you are a new reader I’m sure you will feel the same.
Kambadais’s art style is just as good the second time. Vibrant colors and dark shadows accentuate our favorite characters. The page layouts and bright backgrounds really make everything pop and come to life on the page.
Luckily (for my pocket book) there are not 80+ different covers to collect this time around, however we still get the nice gallery in the back of this comic to display the other covers. I double-dipped with some kindle points to pick up this volume early. No regrets.
This issue ends just as it’s getting good! Sadly, we’ll have to wait all the way to the end of February to get our hands on the next volume. I’ll be on the edge of my seat until I can read more of this fantastic series.
The second issue of this series is just as good as the first, if not more so. The cliffhanger is full of implication and once again falls into place seamlessly within the show. I implore anyone who is remotely interested in this series to buy a copy and support the series. Colorful characters, beautiful artwork, and a plot that will have you interested. It’s a great time to be a Gargoyles fan.
